Living Aspen – The Art of Living with Scars
Cheryl Meakins, Executive Director
Living Aspen is helping individuals heal from deep wounds, often caused by abuse, by addressing the needs of body, soul and spirit in an integrated and self-directed process enveloped in community. Living Aspen seeks to help men and women move from the crisis of surviving to the freedom of living.
Aspen trees are symbols of living in healthy community. They are a colony connected through their roots while individually they display the art of living boldly with visible black scars on bark washed white as snow. Healed, Washed Clean & Living
Cheryl Meakins began Living Aspen after realizing her healing journey was an integrated experience of her body, soul and spirit. Through her own path she began to dream of a healthy community where individuals could make the same journey with all the needed supports in one location while walking alongside others who are on the same path.
Living Aspen is laying its roots in Arvada, Colorado and has begun by building Mending the Soul and Advocacy for Victims of Abuse ministries in local churches.
Community ministries are being developed by introducing groups to work through shame responses, domestic violence awareness and teen dating violence awareness. An integral part of Living Aspen’s development is connecting with existing nonprofits who help those experiencing the crisis of abuse and develop plans to fill in gaps of care and support the existing programs.
Future plans include social enterprises such as the Aspen Valley Tea Company, a gift shop and green houses where those learning to live with PTSD and triggering responses can develop strategies to be successful in employment and healthy relationships.
