AREOPAG Center is a registered NGO (non-governmental organization) with a mission to serve the university community in Prishtina, Kosovo, through academic resources and services.
It is the first non-profit in Kosovo providing a library, reading room, and computer café for a university community. Our center is located between the students’ campus dormitories and the Technical Faculty buildings of the University of Prishtina, three minutes walking distance.
We saw a lack of resources for students, such as a reading room and books and computers in a convenient place, but we also saw a big opportunity to minister to students by opening this Center. After talking and sharing our ideas with local and international friends, we received support from them and in March 2007 we opened “Areopag,” which takes its name from Mars Hill (or Areopagus) in Acts 17:22.
Since opening in March 2007, Areopag has been visited by 700 students, professors, and professionals who came to study, relax, and spend time at our facilities.
The local media, both written and electronic, have advertised us through written articles and TV reportage.
Our motto is: “The mind needs wisdom,” so we would be happy if American believers would support us to make this happen for Kosovo students as future professionals.
Starting with 500 books, we now have 2,500 books that students use for their intellectual and professional development.
Starting with 5 reading tables, we now have 20 reading tables and two big tables for working in groups, a total of 28 places for students.
Starting with 3 computers, we still have only three computers for research and communication. Your help here is needed!
We’ve received books from several individuals as donations to our library, for example, from the great actress Melihate Ajeti, donated by her daughter Antigona Qena; we also received 75 boxes of Psychology text books from a professor in retirement at Arizona State University.
Areopag has donated some of these books to students and to the library of the Psychology Department, University of Prishtina.
User-members come daily to study, to use the internet and to borrow books. Many students come to visit Areopag and ask to know more about our services. We are a potential resource for students’ intellectual, professional, and hopefully spiritual development.
We’ve received cooperation from different professors (local & international) and student organizations and have achieved and sponsored different projects and activities.
We’re building future professionals who will shape our society on European and world ideals.
It’s special when students (user-members) pass an exam, and they come with joy to let us know. We celebrate with them and offer them free coffee and encourage them to continue coming here to study. We encourage and invite you to be part of this.
Areopag’s mission is to provide academic material for students, professors, and professionals, whether in written, spoken (seminars), or internet format for the enhancement of an educated and thoughtful populace.
